Sophie Kahn

Artwork details: - same for all three prints:
Untitled, 60cm x 60cm*, archival Lambda print, 2007, 1 in an edition of 3

Sophie Kahn's images are created from publicly available satellite data of Australian topography. Rendered in her New York studio - half a world away - they depict regions of the country the artist herself has never seen. But through the 'lens' of her 3d visualization software, these landscapes of information are transformed into empty, otherworldly landscapes. Without texture or signs of habitation, they resemble the surface of the moon or a cell under an electron microscope more closely than they resemble our own planet. Part of Kahn's continued exploration of remote viewing and data reconstruction, they remind us, again, that the map is not the territory.

Sophie Kahn was born in London in 1980, and grew up in Melbourne, Australia. She studied at Goldsmiths College, University of London, graduating in 2001 with a BA in Fine Art and Art History, and completed a Graduate Certificate in Spatial Information Architecture at RMIT in 2003. Her work explores the role of the image and representation in the expanded field of post-photographic imaging.
She has presented individual exhibitions at Spacement Gallery - The Waxen and the Fleshy, 2006 & Strange To Inhabit The Earth No Longer, 2005; Studio 12, Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces and Collingwood Town Hall, 2003; 24Seven, 2003; West Space, Melbourne 2002; Linden, Melbourne 2002 and the Ivy Hopes Mezzanine and Cathedral Arcade, Nicholas Building, Melbourne 2002.
