PHILIPPE CHARLES
Philippe CHARLES développe un travail artistique tourné vers l'installation au sein
duquel le médium vidéo s'affirmera comme central.
La démarche de Philippe Charles trouve sa source dans un cheminement personnel qui
l'amène à traiter des états fondamentaux de l'existence (physiques ou autres) tels
que l'état de vie ou de mort, sclérose, dégénérescence ou renouvellement,
assimilation ou résistance... Elle relève d'une relation "dangereuse" au monde.
Progressivement l'installation devient un travail de mise en scène de prises de
vues, opérant ainsi une suppression de l'objet sculpté ou peint, mis en question par
ailleurs dans son rapport au spectateur, pour ne laisser la place qu'à l'essentiel :
une quête aigue de sens d'un artiste dans et face au monde.
Cette mise en question de l'objet ainsi que sa disparition sont prolongées par un
questionnement direct de l' humain -en tant qu'il appartient au monde, y contribue,
dans un environnement parfois hostile, avec des limites qui lui sont imposées et
dont le sens nous échappe-.
Proposant ses mises en scène de prise de vues" comme des espaces "énigmatiques"
laissant place à de multiples associations, la première approche des œuvres de
Philippe Charles peut déconcerter.
Après cette première approche, parfois inquiète, nous percevons sa quête : se
transformer pour poursuivre un chemin d'être en perpétuel ajustement, échapper à la
sclérose, favoriser la rencontre, la régénération. Tels sont les questionnements
auxquels nous sommes confrontés au contact des oeuvres de Philippe Charles. Une
démarche artistique puissante, humaine, spirituelle qui se préoccupe peu de l'art en
soi mais vit l'acte artistique comme moyen de recherche de et sur soi ainsi qu'une
proposition d' un juste positionnement au monde.
Son travail d'artiste se déploie de même au sein d'une structure associative 3015 (
http://www.3015.org) qu'il a créé en 2000, afin d'inviter d'autres artistes à
investir un espace lui appartenant dans le 12e arrondissement à Paris.
After several years of a solitary and auto-didactic painting and sculpture practice
Philippe Charles has developed an artistic practice involving installation, in which
the medium of video occupies an increasing central position. Within this
installation work he is gradually making room for directed works in which the scene
is set, then filmed, bringing about the disappearance of objects. This disappearance
is called into question through the viewer's relationship with it, leaving room only
for the essential: a quest for acute meaning by a man who is in, and confronted by
the world.
This challenging of the object as well as of its disappearance is prolonged by an
increasingly direct questioning of the human condition in a dehumanising society.
Profoundly critical, Philippe Charles's artistic practice has is origins in a
personal progression, which lead him to question fundamental notions of existence
such as the states of life and death, degeneration and renewal, assimilation and
resistances His work comes from a committed, and therefore dangerous, relationship
with the world. Experiencing artworks which come from such a position is never
trivial. Following the first encounter with the works, which may be brutal or
troubling, they question us as the viewer, but above all as part of and contributors
to the world.
Dealing with an environment which is sometimes hostile and whose limits which are
imposed on us and so their meaning escapes us; transforming yourself in order to
follow to your own path, being in a state of perpetual change; escaping sclerosis;
concentrating on the meeting that enables regeneration; these are the preoccupations that confront us when we come into
contact with Phillip Charles's work. An artistic practice bothers little with art,
except as a way of finding a justifiable position within the world.
His artwork is developed in the association 3015 (
http://www.3015.org), which he created in 2000, which invites other artists to
occupies space which belongs to him in the 12th arrondissement of Paris
