The history of western art traces our footsteps through the Louvre in Paris, and many Australian artists have followed this path. These photographs form a visual connection between France and Australia.
A number of years ago our family travelled around Australia. Some of the photographic slides from this experience were projected onto a white sculptured head, reminiscent of the white antique sculptures in the Louvre. New relationships of form were discovered, and the resulting photographs became symbolic links between the two countries.
The projection of the images from Uluru, Central Australia and Kakadu National Park in the north of Australia transforms the white cast head into the rocks of Uluru, and the wetlands of Kakadu, as though they were sculpted out of the rock and the water. The image of my sister, Heather on a fallen log in the Murray River records a moment long since passed, and the image of a dry creek bed becomes like an Italian marble sculpture.
These works reinforce the important links between France and Australia in the visual arts.
