Charles Meryon’s ‘Ministere de la Marine’ c.1855 with an additional Maori war canoe accompanied by Karuawhua Te Wiremu’s ship the Herald from an engraving c.1830.
When very young the great engraver Meryon joined the navy, served on the corvette Rhin and so visited Akaroa the French rival colonising settlement in NZ during the1840s. Years later he included Maori war canoes in the sky of this famous engraving.
The missionary Karuwhua Te Wiremu, a.k.a. Henry Williams, ex British navy from the Napoleonic wars, would accompany Maori war parties on the Herald at short notice and sometimes in his dressing gown, in order to harangue and negotiate peace at the sites of battle.

Two famous courtiers painted by the School of Fontainebleau. To indicate pregnancy, the Duchesses de Villars - Howard - presses the nipple of the Gabrielle d’Estrées - Sarkozy- mistress of Henri IV and mother of three of his children.

Caroline Williams is a conceptual artist with a focus on history painting, politics and portraiture. Her work addresses psychological and social issues – including via the discourse of colonialisms and feminism – questioning the nature of context, memory and convention.

Born in New Zealand she has lived in Europe and Australia and travelled extensively in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. In 1981, she settled in Melbourne, where she married Georges Mora and their son Sam was born in 1985.

Since 1968, Caroline Williams has held over forty individual exhibitions, has participated in over eighty group exhibitions in Australasia, Asia and Europe and has work held in public, corporate and private collections in Australasia, Asia, Europe and North America.
