The Bondi to Coogee series was painted on location along the famous coastal walk from Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach in Sydney. For many Australians the beach is an integral part of life. More than 85 % of Australia´s population lives along the coastline, mainly in cities along the eastern seaboard. It is therefore not suprising that the beach has an iconic status in Australian culture and occupies a special place in the Australian identity.

Unlike the `From Bondi to Coogee´series, which is a work that was painted on location, 'space, light, heat´ is a memory-based work. It is drawn from the strongest memories of Australia that remain with me while I am absent from home. The work seeks to provide a visual representation of an emotional state when thinking of Australia. It is also in a sense an imagined or mythical Australia because as time passes clear memories start to merge with imagined thoughts of home.

Biography
Annabel Butler was born in Tasmania, Australia. She has a BFA (Hons) in painting from the National Art School in Sydney, and also studied at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture and at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. She is represented in Sydney by Charles Hewitt Gallery. Annabel currently lives and works in Munich, Germany.
